Frontiers - Adventures in Learning

Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLT)

All our activities tie in with the PLT framework. For example, we encourage students to collaborate with others, try out alternatives and work towards goals with initiative and perseverance, to invite feedback and deal positively with praise, setbacks and criticism.

Social & Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL)

Our activities develop the five underpinning qualities and skills which help students to manage life and learning more effectively: Self-awareness; managing feelings; motivation; empathy; social skills.

Staff INSET days

We run specialist training programmes for teachers and trainers in schools and youth groups, focussing on effective solutions to bullying, anger or behaviour management.

We focus on positive strategies which, rather than using punishment to modify behaviour, seek to understand why a young person is behaving in challenging ways and teach more appropriate ways to meet their needs.

Our training is based on our pioneering Enablement Model, which combines six key elements: family, self-reliance, visualisation, esteem, identity, and perspective, to lead our students to greater maturity.

Activities for Schools & Youth Organisations

As a small, friendly organisation, we can offer innovative, bespoke activities, based on our local knowledge of Oxfordshire and Berkshire schools & youth organisations.

Outdoor Curriculum

Fun, bespoke educational activities in the woods for young people and adults, which develop teamwork, leadership skills, confidence and communication skills. These courses are ideal for schools, colleges, universities and other youth organisations. We tailor each activity to the group, with a different focus for each Key Stage.

Groups often use our activities to establish team building at the beginning of a key stage or new school year, to embed classroom learning, or as a group celebration for the end of the year.

Our main activities are as follows (click links for more information):

  • Curriculum Enhancement - An ongoing outdoor classroom for personal growth and reflection which links in with the standard curriculum, and provides particular benefit to students who are disengaged from classroom learning.
  • Woodland Team Challenge A fun, educational day in the woods, which builds confidence, self-awareness and motivation.
  • Covert Operations A two-day competitive, scenario-based learning experience, which foster individual and team strengths.
Primary Schools

We work with primary schools to deliver fun, educational days out in the woods, which can be tailor-made to Key Stages 1 & 2.

As well as the Curriculum Enhancement and Woodland Team Challenge, shown above, we also run an outdoor study programme for a class (or other group) of children, which develops organisational skills, social interaction, independent learning, sensory awareness, self-esteem, problem solving, conflict resolution and decision making.

A wide range of activities are available in our programmes, including:

  • Animal handling
  • Shelter building
  • Cooking food over a fire
  • Woodland arts, crafts & games
  • Planting, growing & harvesting plants
  • Becoming familiar with the outdoors
Special Educational Needs (SEN) Children

We specialise in running activities for children with SEN, and all the above activities can be tailor-made to meet the needs of your children.

We work with SENCos, teachers and other agencies, provide group IEPs (if applicable) and information for IEP reviews and targets. The programme is available as one off days, or as a continuing course.
